Carmel is a painter whose recent work is based on research of a place's natural history, social history, and urban development using road maps to provide a framework for conceptual and visual structure. Carmel sees roads as geographical and cultural markers that connect the present to the past and is interested in the relationship between our internal and external worlds, land and civilization, and the act of painting.
